Have you ever heard of Corolla? (Not Toyota Corolla.)
Maybe you have heard of the Outer Banks?
North Caroline! The Old North State?
WHY YOU SHOULD DO A WORK AND TRAVEL IN COROLLA, NC
1. UNIQUE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Corolla is an unincorporated area, so basically is not a town, neither it’s a village. The not-town, not-village Corolla is located in North Caroline, on the awesome 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands called The Outer Banks.

Before bridges were built in the 1930s, the only form of transport between or off the islands was by boat, which allowed for the islands to stay isolated from much of the rest of the mainland.
2. BEACHES WITHOUT AN ENDING AND… WILD HORSES
The beaches on the Outer Banks are among the nicest in the States! When you are at the beach and let’s say you look right – you see no ending to it. You look left – again, an endless beach! The sand is soft and has a mild color between white and beige.
What is more, wild horses are roaming the coastline near Corolla, as they have for more than hundreds of years. You can walk along the shores of these picturesque beaches and observe the wild horses in their natural habitat, which is pretty amazing!
Corolla has a permanent population of approximately 500 people. The local residents, even not that many, are nice and friendly as if they were twice as many! After you spend a week there you will already know half of them. On the second week – you will start to feel as if you grew up there.
Since Corolla is extremely small, you don’t have that many options to spend your money on. Of course, there are ways to spend it, but if you are reasonable, you will see that you can have a pretty good time without wasting money on useless stuff. Generally, “the distractions” in Corolla are not are not that many, which will help you save money to travel after. (Coming next -> Tips for work and travelers on the Outer Banks).
5. IT’S EASY TO FIND A SECOND JOB
As weird as it may sound, that amazingly small place has left nobody without a second job.You can walk from door to door and ask if they are hiring, that’s the best way to do it. That peace of heaven, Corolla, is not so popular among the Work and travelers and there are enough job openings available.
6. ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
After being there for the whole summer, I’ve come to understand that even for Americans it’s an unique opportunity to just be there. The beaches on the Outer Banks have more than ones been rated among the top 10 beaches in the States and are to be seen in many movies.
In the summer Corolla is full of people from different nationalities, it’s like a miniature of the world gathered in this tiny place. Work and travelers in Corolla come from many countries such as Bulgaria, Jamaica, Poland, Colombia, Ukraine, Turkey, Slovakia, Slovenia, etc. You can easily get to know bits of each one of this cultures since you are all gathered in this small area. Eventually, you all become friends with each other. One big happy family!
In Corolla you can meet a lot of people from countries from all over the world, working and traveling same as you, BUT at the same time, you can meet a lot of Americans who also have come to work and travel exactly on the Outer Banks! So, while you are in the States, you might as well get to know the unique American lifestyle… 🙂
While you are working and traveling on the Outer Banks you can visit a place where history changed! The Wright Brothers Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hill, near Corolla, commemorates the first successful flight in a heavier-than-air-machine!
10. QUIET, UNDISCOVERED STRECH OF COASTLINE AND CRAZY BEAUTIFUL NATURE
The air is fresh, the nature is untouched, the people are relaxed. After working for more than 14 hours a day, less or more, it doesn’t matter, you can always recharge at the beach, sit on your balcony with a glass of wine/with a can of beer, or just gather with some nice people to chat. I say nice people, because in Corolla people are at peace. In Corolla you disconnect with the rest of world and connect with each other, with nature, and this brings peace and harmony to your soul.
